That He will be Chairman of the Pennsylvania Convention is Assured.
Philadelphia, Pa., Aug. 21.—The result of last night's Republican primaries was confirmed by conventions today. Interest centered in the selection of delegates to the state convention, of whom seventy were chosen. Of these the Quay people claim seventeen certain, with a contest on five more. The contests are in the First and Fifth wards. In the former the anti-Quayites claimed twenty-seven of the fifty-two divisions. They got possession of the hall and machinery and refused to admit the Quay men, who also claim to have carried twenty-seven divisions. The latter thereupon secured another hall and held a convention. In the Fifth ward, which elected one delegate, each faction held conventions and the rival delegates will fight it out at Harrisburg.
The anti-Quay leaders say Quay has only one delegate in the Fifth ward and say Quay has only 14 votes, claiming that the Third and Fourth wards are against him. Both these wards, however, endorsed the senator's candidacy today.
Before the primaries Mr. Quay's opponents conceded him only ten delegates. In the county conventions the only opposition to the slate developed in the recorder of deeds convention, where Alex. Crow, Jr., the leader of the Quay faction in the Fifteenth ward, was placed in nomination against William M. Geary, who is known as Leader David Martin's personal candidate. Mr. Geary received 810 votes against 132 for Crow.
In the other conventions the slate as agreed upon went through as follows: Judge of the court of common pleas, Craig Biddle; district attorney, George S. Graham; coroner, Samuel H. Ashbridge.
According to figures given out by the Quay leaders, the senator already has 160 votes, 15 more than the number necessary to elect him state chairman. The last county in the state to elect delegates is Lehigh, where primaries will be held on Friday night next and the convention Saturday. Senator Quay says he has not much hope of capturing the four delegates from this county, as the opposition has a very strong organization.
Senator Quay will go to Harrisburg tomorrow and remain there until after the convention on August 28. Gov. Hastings, the leader of the anti-Quay fight, is at present in Harrisburg, as is also Banking Commissioner B. F. Gilkeson, the present state chairman, whom Senator Quay seeks to defeat for re-election.
