From the (N. Y.) Daily Advertiser.
"Perish our Commerce! Let the CONSTITUTION live!"
This exclamation of Mr. Wyndham's, in the British Parliament, at the commencement of the present war with the French Republic, has been rung in a thousand changes by the jacobins of England and America.
The orator, no doubt, thought that if the repeated innovations pursued by the French, destructive of every principle of good order and government, could be prevented from spreading their effects into his native country; a partial sacrifice of its commerce by the war, would be comparatively of little consequence.
He was moderate. Our "exclusive" patriots have so far outdone him in their views, that we hear no more of the horrid exclamation.
They have not only repeatedly attempted themselves, but permitted in others, a violation of our own excellent constitution—but have justified the piracies on our commerce by those who term themselves our ALLIES?
Looking, only, to the will of those Free Booters, they say,
"Let our Constitution and our commerce go to the devil together!"
OBSERVER.
