The spirit of the age is beginning to make itself manifest in the Eternal City. The wheels of progress have overcome every obstruction and reached it. A letter from Rome, dated May 1, says:
The railway to Frascati will be opened to the public probably during the present month, and this first triumph of the spirit of steam in the Roman dominions will soon be followed by still more important improvements. The station, as at first projected, is outside the walls of the city, but the company hope to be able to bring it within the space between the Coliseum and the Arch of Titus. The intrusion of so vulgar an affair as the steam-engine may take away somewhat from the severe character of these majestic ruins, but the living may gain what the dead lose. The gasometer is within twenty steps of the temple of Vesta. A Macadamized road traverses the Forum, telegraph wires follow the Appian Way, and other prodigies of modern art threaten to eclipse the marvels of the ancient.
