Very Rich Gold Strike Reported East of Here
"I've pinched myself until I'm black and blue. It must be true."
This was James Murphy's comment Tuesday regarding a Chocolate Mountain gold strike in which he is associated with Everett and Weston C. VanDerpool and Mrs. Mary L. VanDerpool, all of El Centro.
Murphy was unable to give the extent of the gold deposit but indicated it was "very rich."
"We really don't know how much ore there is present," Murphy said "So far we have only scratched the surface. You can say for me it looks mighty good and may develop into a big thing for Imperial Valley."
Experts who examined samples of the ore claimed it would run as high as $1,500 or $2,000 to the ton.
Murphy admitted the find might be only a rich "pocket" but added "If so. it's a mighty big pocket!"
The original discovery was made by Everett VanDerpool, who traced the findings up a wash and uncovered a hidden ledge, Murphy explained.
"Before we start any kind of real production a road will have to be built. It is difficult to reach by car now," Murphy said.
