WASHINGTON - A faculty member in the Howard University School of Law has been awarded a three year research grant to study the operation of the European Commission and Court of Human Rights in their approach to the international protections of individual freedoms.
She is Dr. Alessandra Luini del Russo, associate professor of law, who teaches international and comparative law at Howard. Dr. del Russo will conduct her studies under the newly inaugurated Howard Research Program designed to provide additional opportunities for research in the social sciences, humanities, teacher education and health and physical education. The program is part of an over-all project by Howard President James M. Nabrit, Jr., to encourage and support more research at the University.
The greater part of Dr. del Russo's study will be conducted in Europe next summer at the seat of the Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France, as well as in Luxembourg and at the Hague.
Her study will include an appraisal of the approach taken by European nations to the concept of human rights and minority rights as a subject of international law, an analysis of decisions and reports issued by and pertaining to the European Commission and the Court of Human Rights, and a study of the advantages and disadvantages of the European system of protecting human rights.
A native of Milano, Italy where she received her early training in the public schools of that country, Dr. del Russo holds the Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of Pavia, Italy, and was the first woman to receive the Master of Comparative Law Degree from George Washington University in 1949.
She has practiced law in both the U. S. and Italy.
