Wednesday Morning.
The following observations were made by a member of Congress, after the report of the committee, to whom were referred the several propositions commemorative of the services of General Washington, was read: "Can a more proper place be elected than the spot where we ought all to vie in emulating his wisdom and virtues? It has occurred to me that a moderate sized Dome might be immediately erected (either in the centre of the Capitol or of the square) on sixteen pillars, with a wreath uniting each, and bearing one letter of the General's immortal name, for it is particularly singular that the letters in the name of GEORGE WASHINGTON correspond with the number of States. This Dome may receive the remains of our departed benefactor, and we may erect a statue of our own Potomac Marble (which equals the Parian) in the centre, and a protecting iron rail between each pillar. The achievements, the virtues of our hero and statesman, can never be forgotten. All therefore that we can do is to cherish his remains amongst us, and to transmit to posterity those noble features and that manly figure, which alone are subject to obliteration by mortality."
"The breathing statue shall each soul inspire
With Patriot virtue and heroic fire,
Love, gratitude, and reverence combine
To consecrate his ever hallow'd shrine."
