"Prices for hogs are not what they were and may not have reached the bottom," says H. G. Zazoral, livestock specialist of the agricultural extension division of the state university "but with the mountains of cheap corn available, hogs should and probably will continue to be marketed at a profit.
"Last year prices of corn dropped so suddenly that much of the crop was cribbed on the farms and has not been sold. With this year's large crop, farmers have an over supply. It has never been considered good business to sell corn off the farm, and with the present low price it certainly is not wise to sell it now. Corn is the principal grain for hogs and should be marketed in the form of pork.
"More hogs should be raised on many Minnesota farms. They fit into about all systems of farming. It is an easy matter to get started in the hog business; the capital required is comparatively small and returns come in within a few months. Money is turned rapidly. If proper judgment is exercised in securing good foundation stock, a strong herd can be bred up in a short time.
"Hogs have paid off many farm mortgages and will continue to do so. I believe this is an opportune time to buy good foundation stock for a swine herd."
