Terrell County Senator and Early
County Commissioner to Talk
About Compulsory Education.
Senator John R. Irwin sees great
danger in the bill now pending in
the Georgia legislature providing
for compulsory education, and has
announced his intention to discuss
the proposed law in a series of ad-
dresses to be delivered throughout
this section.
Senator Irwin has an engagement
to speak at Blakely, in Early county,
next Saturday. and Hon. B. R. Col-
lins. school commissioner of that
county, announces through the Early
County News that he will meet him
in joint debate and uphold the wis-
dom of compulsory school attend-
ance. Mr. Collins. in making the an-
nouncement, says:
"Mr. Irwin writes me that he feels
it is his duty to fight this legislation
in the counties where it is advocated.
Inasmuch as I have been advocating
this improvement in our educational
system for two years in this county
I feel it my duty to defend the posi-
tion I have taken before the people
of Early county. It is the purpose
of this discussion to put the voters
of Early county in possession of all
the facts so that they may know
whether or not their indorsement of
such an act should be given or re-
fused."
Mr. Collins is well known in Ter-
rell county, having taught school
here, and at one time he was princi-
pal of the Parrott High School.
The discussion between the two
gentlemen will doubtless be interest-
ing. and draw a large crowd.
