Full Text

Nov. 24. A Gentleman, just returned from France, relates the singular adventures of an Hexham girl at Calais. He says she had travelled from Hexham with only 7s. 6d. in her pocket, and had only 6d. left from London down to Dover. The master of the packet would not take her in until the English Gentlemen paid her passage. When they arrived at Calais, where she expected to find her brother (the cause of her imprudent journey) the letter she had brought proved it to be Cadiz in Spain, where he resided; yet so great was the generosity of the English Gentlemen that they raised her above six guineas to speed her forward through a country the language of which she does not understand, and has only the direction of a letter for a guide.
