An exclusive paper currency and an exclusive metallic currency.--Neither of them alone adapted to the country or desired by the democracy. The difference between the parties is, that we are content to have the shadow when sure it represents the substance, while our opponents insist that shadow is better than substance, and can stand without it.
The federalists appear to be quite as much in favor of the Sub-Treasury system as the democrats.--This system has been in complete operation for more than a year--ever since the banks suspended specie payments. The administration wished to guard the system by greater legal restraints, which Mr Cambreleng's bill would fully effect; but the federalists, entirely satisfied, as it would seem, with the Sub-Treasury system as it had existed for the last year, voted down the bill, and so overjoyed were they at the result, that they brought out the big guns at midnight and made the welkin ring again. Since the Sub-Treasury gives such general and universal satisfaction, we may presume that the system will remain in operation for some time to come. We always believed that government officers chosen by the people, were proper persons to take care of the public money, instead of Bank directors, chosen by foreign stockholders; and since the federalists have come to the same conclusion, the Independent Treasury system must be deemed the most popular system which can be devised.--New Hampshire Patriot.
