Lower Taxes Keynote of Citizens Party Campaign

Despite the unfavorable weather approximately a thousand people squeezed into the Riley school auditorium and filled the halls at the formal opening of the campaign of the Citizens party, Saturday evening. Hundreds were turned away.

Frank Callahan, candidate for mayor; Alan P. Twyman, candidate for judge; P. A. Parks, member of the Callahan administration four years ago and fifteen other leaders of the Citizens' movement were the speakers.

Callahan was cheered for ten minutes.

ENTHUSIASM RAMPANT

Enthusiasm was rampant and the heckling of Reppa workers was shouted down. Except for the intervention of Chairman Perkins, Marcus Hershovitz would have been summarily ousted from the auditorium for harassing the speakers.

The spirit of 1913 when Callahan was elected mayor was revived by the voters and Ex-Mayor Callahan was given a great ovation. He sounded the keynote of the campaign—economy and efficiency in city government—and said that the fact that it cost the city of East Chicago nearly a half million dollars more to operate than it does the city of Hammond with practically the same population sufficient evidence of the need of economy.

WILL LOWER TAXES.

Callahan said that he would lower the taxes and return the city to the same high standard of efficiency of his former administration.

Although the meeting lasted three hours the audience did not tire of the speeches and manifested its interest in the issues of the campaign by remaining until the close.

P. A. Parks dwelt on the tax issue. He said that the city controller is held strictly accountable for the financial condition and that J. K. Reppa while controller under the present administration fixed the high tax levy that the taxpayers are now being assessed and resigned in an effort to escape the responsibility.

Edward Muha talked of Callahan as a neighbor and citizen. Muha, who is a candidate for councilman from the fourth ward, said that he had known both candidates for mayor for years and that Callahan was more worthy of the office.

One of the outstanding figures in the citizens party is Alan P. Twyman, candidate for judge. With a whirlwind speech Twyman more than once worked his audience to their feet in disapproval of the propaganda from the enemy camp.
