TO THE READERS OF "FOOTPRINTS"
AND "EXTRAS:"

Professor S. Page having persisted in stating palpable
falsehoods in his late papers, entitled "Footprints,"
concerning myself and others in this vicinity, and in
misrepresenting in almost every material statement, even
when truth would have answered his purpose as well;
also, knowing him to be reckless of reason and of his
own character, and willing to attack the character of
persons without respect to age or sex; and knowing that
he respects no law—moral, humane or sacred. I feel it
to be my duty to self and public to not further notice
him in print at present, except to add:

That on Tuesday last, I called upon him in one of the
public stores in Lancaster, and in the presence and
hearing of his friends and mine, I branded him twice as
a liar and once as having offered to commit perjury.—
He exhibited thereafter no manly resentment, but hung
his head as one convicted of such charges in open
court. I deemed it my duty to thus call upon him, and
thus prove him a coward as well as liar; also, as one
ready at any time to commit perjury.

Some days ago, a number of gentlemen in Lancaster,
Stockholders and former patrons of the Institute, offered
to sign and present me a paper for publication, certifying
that the statements of Independent and also of
my Extra, touching the character, conduct and behavior
of Prof. Page, were believed by them to be true and
necessary to be known by the public. At first I tho't
of accepting and printing their paper as a finality; but,
after due consideration and knowing that the name of a
surety only casts doubt upon the principal, I declined
receiving the well meant favor, preferring to stand
upon my own name.

This paper was shown to one of Prof. Page's warm
friends a reasonable time before printing.
