Full Text
A bar of iron which is worth but $5, when manufactured into horse shoes is worth $10, that same bar of iron manufactured into nails is worth $55, and manufactured into pen-knife blades it is worth $29,840, and when manufactured into watch springs, it is increased in value to the enormous sum of $250,000, and all this increase in value is the result of labor alone. If you want this work done in America, protect the labor by a tariff. If you desire to starve your own laborers for the benefit of the European millionaires, not the laborers, for they do not pay their laborers, abolish protection.
