Raleigh, N.C. (ANP) - Irwin Holmes, a Negro engineering student at North Carolina State college, last week was elected co-captain of the college's tennis team, and became the first member of his race to win such an honor or to co-captain a varsity team in any sport in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Described by his coach as a pleasant-mannered person, Holmes polled an equal number of votes with James Spence of Greensboro, N.C., in the balloting for captain.
The coach, while also praising Holmes' ability, said having him on the team presented no problems except in playing South Carolina and Clemson. South Carolina has a law on its books banning integrated athletics. But the coach explained that South Carolina and Clemson colleges send their teams to Raleigh for matches.
Holmes established the team's best record in 1959, but has lost his first three matches this season.
