TWO HURT WHEN AUTO TAKES CURVE AT EIGHTY MILES
One May Die as Result of Dare-Devil Act of Vanderbilt Cup Driver.
Special to the Evening Star.
JERICHO, L. I., Oct. 19. - Arthur Murray, a mechanician, is in a critical condition and Emil Stricker is badly hurt as the result of a smashup yesterday, when the latter drove an automobile at eighty miles an hour into the "S" curve on the speedway here. The 120-horsepower Mercedes, which the driver was trying out for the Vanderbilt cup race next Saturday, skidded off into a ditch, tore down sixty feet of fence and two trees.
Stricker, thrown thirty feet over the front of the car, landed in a soft patch of grass and escaped fatal injury. But his mechanician, Arthur Murray, was pinned beneath the heavy body and crushed and mangled so badly that he no doubt will die. His skull was fractured, his arm was broken and several of his ribs were crushed. Last night, eighteen hours after the accident, he was still unconscious.
Stricker was imported from Germany by Robert Graves, who owns the car, especially for the Vanderbilt contest.
