Full Text

Mr. Beecher preached another sermon at the Twin Mountain House on Sunday, in which he took occasion to answer the objections of the world to what the devil's disciples call "the gospel of gush." Faith, hope and love, these are things the great pastor tells us the children of the evil one call "gush." Mr. Beecher forgets. "Gush" consists in the manner of treating these qualities of virtues, whichever we call them, and not in the qualities themselves. When "gush" takes the place of worship and godly living we are inclined to think—not even Mr. Beecher would defend it, ready as he is to parry the blows of the devil's disciples.—N. Y. Herald.

Story Details

Mr. Beecher preaches a sermon answering objections to 'the gospel of gush,' defending faith, hope, and love as called 'gush' by the devil's disciples; the article counters that 'gush' is in the manner of treating these virtues, not the virtues themselves, and would not be defended if replacing worship.
