Pioneer And Democrat

Olympia, Thurston County, Washington

What is this article about?

The Pioneer and Democrat editorial defends against accusations from the Steilacoom Herald, which published attacks on the Democratic nominee for Congress and refused space for replies from officers like Meeker, Keach, and Moore to Capt. Gove's claims. It refutes Herald's claims on congressional bills and Clarke County convention nominations, calling them lies.

The Last Herald Again. True to its proclivities, the last number of the Steilacoom Herald is devoted almost bodily, to the publication of communications pretending to be refutations of matters that has appeared in the Pioneer and Democrat, and blind attacks upon the nominee of the democratic party for delegate to Congress. Editorially, we are complained of for not giving publicity to the vindications of Messrs. O. P. Meeker, Philip Keach and R. S. Moore, in reply to the communication of Capt. W. Gove, published two weeks since. We think that it required considerable "brass," much assurance and a hard cheek to ask us, after our matter had been prepared for the paper, to publish a pretended vindication of Col. Wallace from the charges alleged against him: particularly when the Herald is issued simultaneously with this paper, and when if any extravagant charges were made by Capt. Gove, they could as readily receive publicity through the columns of the Herald as through this paper. And again, we can but admire the presumption of a man that would throw open his columns to give publicity to low personal attacks upon the integrity of officers in the late volunteer organization, and then assume that he has neither had time nor "space" to insert their written statements in reply.

Capt. Gove's rejoinder will be found in another column, and as will be seen, is sustained by the statements of gentlemen of unimpeachable integrity for veracity. Let those who have any doubts in the premises make enquiries as to the facts contained therein of the late Attorney of the estate of Lieut. Slaughter. We merely refer to this testimony, that those who doubt can convince themselves by enquiry.

In one of the communications in the Herald, signed "Democrat," and dated at Vancouver, an attempt is made to show that the last Congress was a paying one; and that because the last Congress took up and passed certain bills that had been due for fifteen or twenty years, for small amounts, that it was the fault of our delegate that our own war indebtedness was not liquidated. We think it more than likely, that ex-Gov. McMullin, should he feel so disposed, could enlighten our citizens upon this subject. It is generally understood that he figured conspicuously with the Third Auditor, in making up his report upon the justice of our war claims.

The same correspondent of the Herald, assumes "that the democratic convention of Clarke county was held on the 18th of June, and nominated the following ticket:—For the Council—H. L. Caples. For the House—J. D. Biles, Clark Short, —Simmons, —Knapp, —Shockley. And says 'the Pioneer folks had this result in time for the last issue, but did not publish it, &c.' Now this is simply a LIE.—The proceedings of that convention have never been forwarded to us, and we do not even now know the given names of several of the candidates. There has been an evident design about this matter to withhold the proceedings from us, to the end that a little political capital might be made out of the non-appearance of the ticket in its appropriate place. All such attempts are low, mean, and niggardly, to which none but craven hearted scamps will resort. Upon the present occasion, we do not consider it necessary to pay any further attention to what appears in the Puget Sound Herald of the date mentioned.
