APPOINTMENT BY THE PRESIDENT.

Col. Robert C. Nicholas, of Lexington, and late of the United States army, has been appointed Agent for the Chickasaw nation of Indians. He will depart for his destination in a few days.

In the appointment of Colonel Nicholas to this station, the government have acquitted themselves well. There is no officer, of the same opportunities, more meritorious than him. His mind is of the very first order. His conscious uprightness and decisive intrepidity have been sufficiently developed in the manly resistance he made to the rude and invidious assaults and persecutions of his narrow-minded military enemies. In short, he inherits the gigantic intellectual attributes of his deceased patriarchal ancestor. The services of the colonel, during the late war, are too fresh in the minds of his countrymen to need resuscitation. May the God of all goodness render the remainder of his days as happy as the most favored of human beings.
