NEW ORLEANS (SAMP) Samuel Barnes Jr., senior at Xavier University, was declared a suicide by police after an alleged leap from the highest point on the Huey Long bridge into the Mississippi river. The leap was actually not witnessed but a shirt of the youth pinned to a steel girder bore a note which the youth said as his last letter. Two days after, the body of Barnes was taken from the river some distance below the bridge. Barnes had made a trip to New York in July in an effort to get on a Major Bowes program, and became ill while in the east. In his letter he declared the trip to New York had nothing to do with his suicide leap.
