Indian Hostilities.
HELENA, Montana, July 5.—Sec'y Mills,
who visited Missoula, reports to the government, that, on news of the Nez Perces insurrection, the Flat Heads began to disappear and finally none are left in that
valley, they having presumably gone to
join their hostile brethren; this created
great alarm among the white residents.
It is stated by the Indians that the Crows
and Sioux will unite against the whites.
The Nez Perce insurrection was prematurely precipitated by some warriors who
massacred the white families in advance of
the preparations: all hostiles have about
245 lodges. There is urgent need of
troops and guns in Missoula Valley; the
situation is grave.
News from Sun River reservation is of an
alarming character.
The people are preparing to defend themselves from Indians,
or flee, as seems wisest; aid from the government has been invoked.
