Full Text
"Camp Douglas now embraces one hundred and fourteen acres, having been largely extended since its original occupation by our own troops, (at which time it embraced but eighty-seven,) owing to the continued arrivals of prisoners from Donelson, Pittsburgh, and elsewhere. The prisoners occupy the barracks and the stables formerly used by Brackett's cavalry. The quarters are clean, neat and comfortable—far exceeding, in all these qualities, the filthy tents and still filthier subterranean hovels to which the rebels have been accustomed in their own camps. About two thousand more can be accommodated: and if tents were pitched, a still greater number could find accommodation within the limits of the camp."
