Cong. Powell Aide Accused of Filing Fraudulent Returns

NEW YORK- Hattie Freeman Dodson, personal secretary to Rep. Powell (D-N.Y.), and her husband, Howard I. Dodson, were indicted last week on 36 charges of federal income tax fraud.

They were accused of receiving $2,000 by filing false refund claims, and of evading more than $5,000 in taxes from 1948 to 1952.

The alleged violations included the filing of false and fraudulent statements, filing claims for non-existent dependents and filing false returns.

Mrs. Dodson evaded taxes by making two sets of returns and claiming false dependents on each return, the government charged.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Samuel R. Robert Pierce Jr. said the indictment returned by a federal grand jury was one result of a tax fraud investigation still going on.

Mrs. Dodson is the business secretary, and her husband is choir master at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, of which Powell is pastor.
