A Portion of Thomas Cahill's Residence Destroyed.
At 12 o'clock last night The Leader was informed by telephone that the residence of Thos. Cahill, corner Eddy and Twenty-fifth streets, was in flames. A reporter hastened to Dyer's hotel and turned in the alarm. By this time one of Mr. Cahill's sons came running down Eddy street loudly shouting "Fire! fire!" Willing hands soon grasped the ropes attached to the hook and ladder truck and various hose carts, and those flame fighting implements were soon en route to the scene of the conflagration.
The flames had already consumed a shed and were rapidly destroying the large L which forms a portion of the house, when two streams of water began playing upon the building. Axes and hooks were used to tear down the west wall of the burning edifice to allow water to strike the flames. The fire was confined to the L, and a better portion of the building saved.
The family had extinguished all lights and retired fully two hours before the fire broke out, and cannot imagine the source of its origin. Nothing was removed from the house and a great deal of the furniture was badly damaged while part of it was completely destroyed.
It is impossible to estimate the extent of the damage, but Mr. Cahill stated that the loss was fully covered by insurance.
Mrs. Cahill was driven into hysterics by the unusual excitement and it is feared that she will suffer severely in consequence.
