On Which Side.
The radical abolitionists and the 'conservative republicans' (!) each claim that the President is with them, and will shape his policy according to their several notions. The President is like the shield we read of in romance, that had two sides, one of brass and the other of iron, which caused many disputes among the knights who approached it from opposite directions. President Lincoln has a good many sides, and it would puzzle the most astute of that shrewd class known as Philadelphia lawyers to consistently interpret and harmonize his various promulgations.
