Preaching. -- On
Thursday night, Plymouth Church
voted to increase the salary of its
Pastor, Henry Ward Beecher, to
$20,000 per annum. In the course of
a discussion among the leading members,
the idea was thrown out that this increase
is made in consideration of Mr. Beecher's
advancing years, and the circumstance
that it is his intention of retiring from public.
One member hoped that next year the salary
would be fixed at $25,000. The interesting
query was propounded several hundreds
of years ago, does Job serve God for naught?
