PROSPECTUS
OF THE
GENIUS OF LIBERTY.
PUBLISHED BY THE BOARD OF MANAGERS OF THE
LA SALLE COUNTY ANTI-SLAVERY SOCIETY.
The La Salle County Anti-Slavery Society having resolved to continue the publication of an Anti-Slavery paper in Illinois, the subscribers, as the Publishing Agents of the said Society, are induced to issue this Prospectus, briefly to declare the principles of the publication, and to solicit the aid of abolitionists generally in its support.
The Genius of Liberty will be devoted to the establishment of the inalienable and universal rights of man, as set forth in the Declaration of American Independence—to the support of our free republican institutions, and the IMMEDIATE ABOLITION OF SLAVERY. It will strive to accomplish these objects by the irresistible force of Truth and Justice, supported by facts and arguments, by free discussion, by appeals to the reason and judgment of a cool and reflecting people, and by the general diffusion of knowledge.
It will observe a strict neutrality in regard to any denominational or party influence,—yet its columns will be open to censure or approval, as the principles and conduct of the various religious sects and political parties affect, directly or indirectly, the great subject of Liberty or Slavery.
A portion of this paper will be devoted to the current News of the day, both Foreign and Domestic—to Agriculture—to Historical Sketches and Geographical Descriptions of the Western country—and to all other subjects of importance to its success as a useful and interesting Family Journal.
The aid of every friend of Humanity and Justice is invoked to sustain the Genius of Liberty, that he may contribute to the permanent establishment of his own Rights, while he prepares the way to raise his voice with the nation to "Proclaim Liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof."
H. WARREN, Editors and Publishing Agents.
Z. EASTMAN,
Lowell, Nov. 28, 1840.
