A VERY MATERIAL LETTER.
TAXATION and Representation are said to be inseparable; in all free Countries it is so, and the very Idea of its being otherwise is repugnant to Liberty. The imposing therefore Taxes on the Americans, in their present Situation, is a gross Offence to that Constitution of which Englishmen boast and glory in.--- It would be taking that by Force which wants the Owners Consent to grant; it would be a Robbery supported by the Sword, and the Injury done to her Laws of Freedom. Away, then, with all those idle Tales which daily spring up in Support of an Administration, Scotch-Men and Tyrants. An honest Englishman knows no such Nature,-.. Let the Term Rebellion flow only from the Lips of disgraceful and disgusting to the primest Part of our present Legislation Word; and the Americans, so far from being Rebels, are nobly resisting Tyranny and Irreligion, long attempted to be exerted over them, and, like our Ancestors convened in Runnymede before King John, are standing up for Liberty. Grant them that, agreeable to Magna Charta, and they will be on a Level with us. At present they are not, because they are not represented; and whatever long Columns those ministerial Writers. Regulus, Hyrtaces, Brecknock, and the Lord knows who, may give us in Proof of it. the whole of their long-winded Doctrine amounts to no more than this : America is Right in its Struggle; Administration is tyrannic, and if its Measures are not speedily softened, Destruction and Damnation will alight somewhere.
