Former College Football Star Ends Own Life As Wife Learns of Bigamy
NEWTON, N. J., May 7.-Archie G. Ackroyd, former Lafayette college football and soccer star, shot himself today after a pistol duel with State Trooper Taylor, developing from discovery by his bride of three months that Ackroyd had another wife and two children in Philipsburg.

The second wife attempted to leave Ackroyd last night shortly after learning of his former marriage. She eluded him today when the two were on a downtown street and sought protection of the police.

Trooper Taylor was assigned to escort her to a farm near here, where they had been living, to gather clothes. They found the door barred and Ackroyd began shooting when the trooper attempted to break in. His bullets and those of Taylor in reply went wild. They found him dead when the door gave way.
