The monthly dinner meeting of the Hyder Chamber of Commerce was held at the Silver Grill Wednesday evening with 27 members and visitors present from both sides of the international boundary line. President E. D. Haddon presided.
At the conclusion of the excellent repast, Secretary H. R. Cross reported receipt of a copy of a letter written by Leo P. Bott, of the Bott Advertising Agency of Little Rock to Ripley, famous cartoonist, in which Mr. Bott took issue with Mr. Ripley for referring to Alaska in one of his cartoons as "bleak Alaska." Mr. Bott suggested that if Ripley take a trip to Alaska he would find it anything but a "bleak Alaska" and might thereafter refrain from injuring the Territory by such unwarranted allusions.
Mr. Cross also presented a letter from James Truitt, U. S. Engineers' office, thanking the Chamber for material furnished for the War Department report on the Salmon River flood protection project.
N. M. Traversy, chairman of the committee on fire protection, reported no further developments in the plans to provide adequate fire protection for the camp.
Ernest Blue, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce international highway committee, reported that plans for issuing a 12-page special Chamber of Commerce edition of the Hyder Herald to boost the international highway project were making good progress and stated that the edition was expected to issue in about two weeks time. Mr. Blue also expressed the thanks of his committee for the excellent advertising support given by the business people of Hyder.
The Chamber next extended votes of thanks to a committee consisting of Holger Johnson, B. B. Smith and H. W. Thomas for effective services in cleaning up the camp for the recent celebration and to Messrs. S. P. Fitzgerald, B. B. Smith, Frank Reichenback and Frank Fisher for the preparation of a splendid ore display in Chamber of Commerce Hall during the celebration.
President Haddon reported unsuccessful efforts made by the Chamber of Commerce to induce a large party of Congressmen and other notables to visit the district during the celebration and N. M. Traversy suggested that the Ketchikan Commercial Club be invited to visit Hyder on Labor Day, at which time a delegation of the Ketchikan Moose Legion is scheduled to come here. The suggestion was adopted.
Mr. Haddon directed attention to the annual election of officers in October and announced that nominations for the various offices will be held at the next meeting in September. Members in arrears were also urged to pay up their dues in order to qualify for nomination and vote at the election.
In response to invitations from President Haddon, Hans G. Mross, Texas creek mining man, spoke briefly and Howard Campbell, Stewart visitor voiced his approval of the Chamber's idea of holding dinner meetings. Mr. Campbell also referred to the fact that a number of Stewart business men belonged to the local organization and said it was an excellent way for Hyder and Stewart to get together.
"It promotes friendly feeling and a spirit of mutual helpfulness," he said.
Mr. P. S. Jack, Stewart member of the Chamber, and the district's ablest raconteur, told one of his amusing stories, after which the meeting was concluded.
