MURRAY ANDERSON DECRY GOP ATTITUDE ON 'ISSUES'
A Democratic rally was held Saturday afternoon at the local high school gym featuring Senator James E. Murray. LeRoy Anderson, Conrad, candidate for Congressman and candidates for the county and state offices.
Wilbur Werner, Cut Bank, served as master of ceremonies and handled the introductions for the afternoon. He introduced those seeking offices on the Democratic ballot here in Glacier county and then presented LeRoy Anderson, a Pondera county farmer, to the crowd.
Anderson outlined the issues of the campaign and discussed those of greatest importance in this area. Terming the present Republican administration a sorry failure in foreign affairs, he called for a limit on the import of foreign oils so development of new fields could go ahead.
He noted that the present administration had all but turned their backs on solemn treaties made in years past with the Indian tribes. These treaties, said Anderson, "cannot be abrogated without consent of the Indian tribes." He pointed out that the nation's honor was at stake and pledged to fight to uphold them.
Anderson attacked the agricultural policy as being an attitude of calloused indifference toward the farmer. He pointed out that scientific research undoubtedly could provide a means to produce by-products from the surpluses and dissipate this problem.
"Benson in his early months in office deliberately drove down beef prices," Anderson said, "all the while the packing companies took advantage of his stand on aid to the rancher, and upped their prices." To the average farmer, he said, "Bensonizing is like going through the meat grinder."
State Senator George McCabe introduced Senator Murray who warmly seconded Anderson's statements. The senator spoke of the refusal of the Republican party to campaign on the issues and their use of personal attacks on candidates to confuse the voting public.
He warmly recommended the election of Anderson, saying he was in great need of a man in the House with whom he could work and who could support issues in the House that originated in the Senate.
Senator Murray discussed the vast resources of the state and pointed out that only power was needed for their development.
Referring to the Indians as victims of oppression, he pledged his support to aid them in their problems.
The tourist trade, said the senator in closing, is Montana's third largest industry. In order to further increase it, he called for better accommodations in our national parks. The condition of our national parks is a disgrace, the senator said.
