Three weeks ago William Hogenkamp, the President of the Second National Bank of Jersey City, received an intimation that Jacob H. Cadmus, the receiving teller, had misappropriated some of the bank's money. Without saying anything to Cadmus, he ascertained from the books that the latter had abstracted at different times a total of $4,700. He had been in the bank fourteen years. He is forty years of age, and lives with his family at Rutherford Park. His tastes were simple and he had no extravagant habits. A few months ago, however, he began to drink heavily.
Mr. Hogenkamp declined yesterday to say anything further than that Cadmus had appropriated the money and had been suspended. He could not say whether the bank would prosecute him criminally. The bondsmen of the teller will be required to make good the amount of the defalcation. The money was taken in small sums from the cash drawer.
