Uncle Sam Gets Big Bear Fighter.

Washington, D. C., July 20.—A powerful fighting unit will be added to Uncle Sam's naval strength today, when the super-dreadnought Maryland is formally turned over to the Government by her builders at Newport News. The distinguishing feature of the new battleship is her battery of eight 16-inch rifles, in addition to which she will be equipped with a secondary battery of fourteen guns, anti-aircraft guns, and submerged torpedo tubes. When placed in commission she will carry a complement of 1,600 officers and men.

Captain Preston, a Maryland man, has been honored with selection as her first commander. Immediately after being placed in commission the Maryland will be sent to join the Pacific fleet.
