Full Text
Probably there are not half a score of Whig journals in the country which have not denounced the march of our army to the Rio Grande as the cause of our present war with Mexico,--The federal organ in this city found a basis for column upon column of abuse of the administration in the foolish and false text thus generally paraded. Not only this; but it charged the President with baseness, in forcing Gen. Taylor thus to advance, with a mere handful of men, against his wishes. Why does not that paper now step forward, and admit what is proved to the world, that Taylor not only approved of this movement, but counselled it. In one of his dispatches, dated October 4, 1845, he says--I do not feel at liberty, under my instructions, to make a forward movement to the Rio Grande, without authority from the War Department; but he urges that such a movement will tend to good results, and advises that we take possession, "at once, of one or two suitable points on or quite near that river." "We are too far from the frontier', are his words in the same dispatch. "Our strength and state of preparation should be displayed in a manner not to be mistaken."
And we are told this man, Gen. Taylor, must be the Whig candidate for the Presidency; and some of the strongest of the organs of the anti-slavery division of that party intimate that they may support him! The Providence Journal will do so, of course!
