ALEXANDRIA:
THURSDAY, APRIL 2, 1818.

FROM our Correspondent at WASHINGTON.
Wednesday, April 1.

A bill fixing Monday, the 2d of November, for the opening of the next meeting of congress, was yesterday ordered to be engrossed for a third reading, and it is probable will be passed this day.

That this measure is well intended, who is he that can entertain a doubt? but what will be the effect of it? Will it be to take off so much of the session from its end and patch it to its commencement, or to increase the length of the session by one month, thereby afford time for all the business of the session to be done, or only to supply more time for the evolution of words? If the last, heavens! what a cataract of sound will fall on the floor of congress!

At the instance of Mr. Pitkin the house resolved to appoint a committee to join a committee from the senate to consider and report what part of the business is most necessary to be acted upon before the close of the present session.

The bill making appropriations for carrying on the Cumberland road was under consideration of the house in committee a great part of the day, was reported without amendment, and ordered to be engrossed for a third reading.
