Many leading characters among Democratic Republicans do not hesitate to acknowledge that the assassination of the Press which preceded the election of President & Vice President of the United States, was not long lived—enmity between the Jews and the Christians—was nothing but a struggle for power, and for the loaves and fishes”—All the inflammatory publications in the democratic papers, relative to the sedition and alien acts, the expenses of the army and navy, the dilapidations of Messrs. Pickering, Wolcott, &c. it is now admitted, were only to destroy the confidence of the people in one set of men, in order to elevate another to office, of honor or of profit.
Should the same weapon to be used against the present, which they used against the late administration; should the same false and wilful misrepresentations of public measures, and of private character, be indulged—what an outcry would be raised—what complaints of the laxity of slander—would be heard from a certain quarter! The party now dominant in the United States, have obtained their power by means, which for the honor of America, and of human nature, it is to be hoped may never be imitated. It is devoutly to be hoped that the public moral and the national character may never again receive such a shock as they experienced at the last election—yet is it not to be feared from the success of this art attempt (in this country) to gain power, by vilifying and degrading the characters of those whom the unallied will of the people had placed in offices of trust, that future adventurers, more desperate in their views and their fortunes, in order to obtain the Supreme direction of our national affairs, will put the Peace and safety of our government at hazard. After these examples that have been set, the holders of office under the new administration should take as their motto, those words from an excellent, tho old fashioned work:
"Let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall."
