Harvey Flying Service Files Objections
WASHINGTON (A) - The Civil Aeronautics Board has proposed to reopen for the second time its hearing on the need for additional air service in the Kodiak Island area. CAB examiner Paul Pfeiffer gave the parties in the proceedings five days in which to file any objections to the reopening of the hearing about July 13.
The place is to be fixed later, to receive testimony by James W. Harvey, of Harvey's Flying Service. The proceedings were originally a part of CAB's investigation of air services within Alaska. Intra-Alaska case is completed for the most part, but was reopened for the hearing May 27 on the Kodiak portion.
After the hearing Pfeiffer received a telegram from Harvey complaining that he had not been notified. Harvey said he took exception to testimony that Kodiak Airways is the only year around air service on Kodiak Island. He said he has operated in the Kodiak area for five years, and the last two years the year around. He said "public necessity for air service on Kodiak Island can be adequately fulfilled under the present authority engaged in by Harvey Flying Service and Kodiak Airways."
The need for air service is not sufficient to warrant the government to contribute to and stabilize the economic status of one of these two existing year round air services. The issuance of a subsidized certificate to one of two such services within a given area would exclude self-supporting operator, and force upon an unwilling public the unhappy state of having no choice of such air service as is needed."
Harvey urged a further hearing at Kodiak. He said the cost of going to Washington is "prohibitive."
