WHAT ABOUT OUR CHILDREN?
We hear and read a lot about "juvenile delinquency" which are big words for "children gone wrong."
J. Edgar Hoover, head of the FBI, says that juvenile delinquency is on the upsurge, and the percentage of young criminals is increasing. He spreads the blame for this terrible condition on (1) parents who are too busy working and making money; --(2) general war hysteria or excitement when many folks go hay-wire and do things they would be ashamed of in ordinary times;--(3) racketeers and "smart guys" who see a chance to clean up, even at the expense of children, while the world is goofy and worrying about other problems.
What is happening to our girls and boys in the "teen-age"? Too young to be in uniform; too young to work; still in school; what is happening to them while their older brothers and sisters and their fathers are in uniform?
Mr. Hoover says they are not doing so good.
That will not be nice news for those in uniform who are fighting for them. Who is to blame for this condition? Does it exist in Roanoke Rapids?
Parents of teen-age girls here, preachers and teachers, city officials who have official charge of the situation. would be able to answer that question if they had traveled the streets of Roanoke Rapids or any other town like this last Saturday midnight to Sunday dawn. On any recent date of the same period.
