The editor of the Every Evening will find that his efforts to divide the Republicans by the cry of Addicks, has no influence whatever at this time. The candidates have been nominated in good faith, and the Republicans generally will vote for them. The mayor and members of city council have nothing whatever to do with the election of candidates to the U. S. Senate and consequently the voters will cast their ballots next Saturday without reference to that question. The cry of Addicks and anti-Addicks will not detract a single vote from any of the candidates for municipal offices. The Republicans wish to revolutionize the mode of doing business in our city, they wish to stop the piling up of the city debt and lessen if possible the rate of taxation, and they will not be influenced in their purpose by the scarecrow of Addicksism that the Every Evening is relying on. His opposition to the policy of the McKinley administration should open the eyes of every one, and lead every Republican voter to support the candidates nominated. The editor is a Jacobin of the worst kind. He is opposed to the protection of American industry, opposed to the course of the administration in regard to Porto Rico and Cuba and the Philippines, consequently his opposition to a change in our city government is easily understood.
For several years our city government has been controlled by Democrats, and the result is an increase of debt and taxation. It is high time this extravagance shall stop, and there is no way to stop it but by a change in the city council. All the old members are candidates for re-election and their election would be an endorsement of their past course. The voters should understand this. Democrats as well as Republicans are opposed to increased taxation and consequently should vote for a change. They should remember the old saying that a new broom sweeps clean and the same be said of a change of parties in every office. We need reform in every department and now is the time to prepare to make it by the election of the candidates of the Republican party.
