MOYE'S WELL
Is Now Down The Full 250 Feet
The well, which Mr. McLease is drilling for E. Moye at the latter's residence on North Oregon street, reached a depth of 250 feet this morning.
This is as deep as the first contract required and the drilling has been stopped until an investigation is made to see if water has been struck at the depth.
A stream of water was struck at a depth of 135 feet, but it has a salt taste and Mr. Moye is anxious to find a pure mesa water.
The water that is running in from the stream at 135 feet depth will have to be shut off and the well emptied of what has run in, before it can be ascertained whether or not any other stream has been struck. If none has been struck, the well will be sunk 100 feet farther. Mr Moye thinks that if none is found at a depth of 350 there will be no use to go any farther in search of mesa water there.
The result of Mr. Moye's experiment is looked forward to with a great deal of interest, as the finding of a stream of good water at this place would demonstrate the fact that better water for the city can be secured at a comparatively small cost. Mr. Moye says he firmly believes that good water can be secured at this place, otherwise he would not have gone to the expense of drilling the well.
He made the experiment mostly because he wanted the water for his own use but partly to find out if the city can get better water close to town.
For the entire distance the hole has been drilled through different formations of granite containing an occasional streak of iron.
A man who has worked in the oil regions of Pennsylvania tells Mr. Moye that some of the last mineral taken from the well is oil bearing sand. Mr. Moye says he would rather have it artesian-water-bearing than oil-bearing. He will have the water first struck analyzed.
