LOCAL CANCER UNIT
ESTABLISHED
Mrs. Joseph Deisher, recently appointed chairman of the Seward Permanent Unit, American Cancer Society, met with her committee Thursday night to plan the program in Seward.
Assisting Mrs. Deisher are Mrs. Murl Trevethan, distribution chairman, and Mildred Kirkpatrick, publicity chairman.
A program of education and information was planned which includes radio, theater and newspapers as well as individual contact. All women's organizations will be informed in the near future of a special film to be shown on the recognition of breast cancer.
Nine doctors from seven Alaska communities, including Seward, attended the refresher course on cancer diagnosis and treatment, conducted last fall in Portland by the University of Oregon Medical School. This was made possible by the combined efforts of the Alaska Department of Health and your Alaska Division of the American Cancer Society.
A new field of service has been added to the program of the Alaska Division--that of Direct Aid, financial or otherwise, to cancer patients. This was inaugurated just last fall and several patients have already benefitted by the direct aid program.
The program is intended primarily for curable patients, or those whom the doctors feel reasonably sure can be cured. But terminal case aid in the form of dressings and medicines is also available and several terminal cases are now on the roster.
