Mr. THOMAS,
WE are greatly alarmed at the present condition of our Superior Court of Judicature. We have for a long time been plagued with men in whom we could not confide. We have thought our lives and fortunes unsafe. We have seen instances of such an undue influence, as have justly excited our fear, and sometimes have raised our indignation. It is madness to trust ourselves in the hands of our enemies. Ignorance and party-zeal have too long usurped the seat of learning and candid disquisition. The list of promotions since the accession of the present governor to the chair, compels us to connect together the ideas of an infamous, unprincipled renegade with that of a modern friend to government. The death of Justice Ropes has occasioned a vacancy which we wish to see filled up by a learned and upright judge. We are sure that no man who has sold his country is fit to decide upon the lives and properties of his countrymen. We cannot bear forever--we think we have borne too much.-
Our children must suffer for our tameness in times past. Our consciences upbraid us with our negligence. We look to the honourable the Council Board, to prevent a pensioned Governor from placing a base, time-serving Justice upon the Bench. We pray them to use the constitutional power in their hands to save us from ruin, but we are determined if reasoning and praying are found ineffectual with men, to cast ourselves upon all-gracious providence.

Main Argument
the superior court is compromised by untrustworthy judges influenced by the governor; the council must appoint a learned and upright judge to the vacancy left by justice ropes to protect lives and properties, or the people will act independently.
