FRENCH FRATERNITY.
The following outrageous transaction furnishes a PRACTICAL COMMENTARY on Bonaparte's Milan decree. A parallel is not to be found in all the annals of piracy.
From New-York, March 25.
IMPORTANT.—Yesterday arrived at this port, the brig Lambert, Jenkins, from the Isle of May, and St. Jago; came passengers Mr. Wells and family, and Capt. Hans Brown, of Philadelphia. From these unfortunate passengers the following statement of facts is received:
They took passage at London, Jan. 10, 1808, on board the American ship called Bristol Packet, James Burns, master, bound for New-York. They left Gravesend the 12th of January, and the Downs on the 17th, with fair wind and weather, which continued until the 24th when two sails hove in sight. Unfortunately they proved to be two French frigates, Themis and Penelope, 4 days from Bordeaux. They immediately made prize of the ship, under the French Decree, finding she was from a British port, and besides had British manufactures on board. They ordered the captain and passengers on board the frigate, and after taking out of the prize about 50 packages of dry goods they scuttled her. It is supposed she had on board a cargo worth 150,000 dollars.
