Gen. Nicholls' Position
[Louisiana Bugle Call.]
We have received a letter from Gen. F. T. Nicholls, now at Eureka Springs, Ark., and have seen another letter, addressed from that place, to one of his friends in St. James.
We are therefore authorized to state that while Gen. Nicholls is not a candidate for Governor, and that, resting full confidence in the ability and honesty of purpose of Gen. Ogden, he is desirous of seeing that hero of the 14th of September elected to fill the executive chair of Louisiana. As, however, the defeat of the present clique and combination is his main object, he will not decline the nomination if tendered him by the anti-ring element, in the event that his acceptance may be considered indispensable to all the now scattered and divided elements antagonistic to the McEnery candidacy, so adroitly managed by Messrs. Burke, Houston and Cosgrove.
Gen. Nicholls did not say this in as many words, being too modest to assume that his presence is, at this time, a political necessity; but what he did say, is that he will do his utmost to bring about a disruption of the present administration ring; and to our positive question, of whether he would accept the nomination if tendered him by the untrammelled Democracy, he made no direct answer, leaving us to infer, that although unwilling to get into politics again, he is now, as he has ever been, at the service of his State and people.
