An effort to work out suitable arrangements for operation of the Kenyon Plunge under a USO program will be made according to Miss Goldie Carter, New York USO representative who arrived in El Centro Friday evening.
Miss Carter, who is director of field operations of the YWCA and USO, said that the need for an outdoor program in conjunction with the usual USO activities is recognized for this area and if an agreement can be reached with Mrs. Kenyon the USO will obtain the services of qualified personnel to operate the swimming pool.
ON INSPECTION TOUR
Making an inspection tour of western USO facilities, Miss Carter was joined in Los Angeles by Mrs. Clara Alcroft, Southern California supervisor for YWCA work in USO.
They met with Fay Andrews, El Centro director, and Mrs. Rita Noah, staff assistant, in checking the facilities and observing activities of the program in El Centro.
"We are looking forward to the obtaining of new quarters and believe the new proposed site (California Electric Building) will make an expanded program available for El Centro," Miss Carter announced.
When the new building is approved by the New York office where a lease signed by the irrigation district has been forwarded, a operating committee comprising representatives from civic organizations will be set up to act as local board of directors under whom the USO activities will be carried out. This will tend to keep the program flexible for expansion or curtailment if necessary, the visitor said.
LAUDS EL CENTRANS
"The national office especially is interested in El Centro because the community has carried on an extensive program over a long period of time without outside assistance. This reflects a great deal of credit upon the community and volunteer leaders," Miss Carter said. "Since there are not many resources available in this area and military activities are expanding on the west coast, the USO is directly interested in maintaining enlarged programs," she declared.
The possible expansion to include the plunge at Holtville and general extension will be subject of a trip there and a meeting with volunteers before she leaves the valley, Miss Carter said.
