"I am unable to throw any light on the subject of a mission to Constantinople. It was very seriously thought of by government, at the last session, and the person alluded to in your publication was talked of. It has not been, during the present session, a subject of conversation; and as there is no proposals for an outfit, I should suppose the plan had been relinquished; but your informant has perhaps better information on the subject than I have. It is a fact that Commodore Bainbridge will visit Constantinople. I have not been told that any person is to accompany him.
Despatches have been received from Madrid. Rumours are afloat as to their contents. A cabinet council sat on Friday. The silence on the subject, by the members of the administration, has caused unfavorable surmises, as to our affairs with Spain—but I am rather inclined to think, that the despatch is not of very great importance.
I did not hear Mr. King's speech in the senate; but I was told by a Federalist, that it was the most seditious he had ever heard; that he took grounds calculated to shake the Union to its centre. The manner in which he and others have acted, and the violence of the Virginians at Richmond, begin to make good men apprehend consequences of the most serious nature. Civil war, and a division of the union, have become subjects of every day conversation. Maryland, in either case, would be unhappily situated."
