Full Text
The United States dragoons were en route on the 20th, commanded by Col. Twiggs, and to pass through Austin to the territory beyond the Nueces. The infantry and artillery (Gen. Taylor in command) were to leave New Orleans on the 21st inst., for Corpus Christi. The tidings of the march of the United States troops to the frontiers of that country, were received by the Texans with delight. No positive information seems to have been recently received at Austin, of the position of the Mexican troops. Our charge was looking for accounts, by an express from the frontier; but it is believed that but few or no Mexican troops had crossed the Rio Grande. It was said that Gen. Arista had not crossed that river with his force, and probably did not mean to make the attempt. A small corps of Texan rangers were operating in the country between Austin and the Western frontiers.
