The government was saved considerable trouble when Otis Meredith, kidnapper of a St. Louis couple, died at the Grand Rapids hospital, Friday. Meredith and his companion, John Couch, were trapped by officers at the home of the former's father-in-law near Effie. Couch surrendered and Meredith was shot when he attempted to flee.

He lived from Monday when he was shot, to Friday.

The dead man's mother again demonstrated the truth of "a man's best friend is his mother" by sticking to her boy and taking his body to Ashtown, Kansas for burial.
