"NECESSITY KNOWS NO LAW."
Six or eight children are at home in the north part of the town in the same building with their father, who is down with smallpox. In an urgent plea made in the interest of the public, the World last night made a request for a building to be provided by the county commissioners where persons afflicted with contagious diseases might be taken with safety to themselves and to the community in general.
The World is informed that W. A. Saunders, commissioner of this district, is not in town. Under the circumstances it might fall to the lot of the city or the health officer to assume the responsibility in the matter.
While it may be outside the province of the city officials to take up this question of a sick family beyond the city limits, it is a matter of such public importance that they would be perfectly justified in taking cognizance of it and doing what was necessary in the matter.
"Necessity knows no law."
Under the premises the city authorities may have no power to act or assume the initiative in this matter, but humanity and necessity both demand that they do something to place this man and all others who are afflicted with a contagious disease in this city in a building by themselves.
Give the children a chance.
The public health demands it.
