The Department of Parks and Recreation opened its indoor recreation program this week at 246 centers.
Of the 246 recreation areas, 36 are department-owned centers, 165 schools, 23 swimming pools and 22 winter sports areas.
Hours are scheduled 3:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. for schools and 3:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. for centers. All locations are supervised by college-trained recreation specialists.
Youth fitness classes will again be given special emphasis. These sessions will include tumbling, weight lifting, calisthenics, drills and marching.
The backbone of recreation is the gym classes for youngsters, competitive sports such as basketball and hockey, social and ballet dancing, swimming, table tennis, roller and ice skating. For adults there are special slim-down classes, badminton, volleyball, etc. Creative endeavors include crafts, woodshop, sewing, cooking and model airplanes.
Big on the list are 78 teen-age dance clubs that hold dances at various locations weekly.
Special senior citizens programs are conducted at Cannon, GAR, Herman Gardens, Patton, O'Shea, and St. Clair centers.
On Wednesday, October 26, the State Fair Indoor ice-skating rink opens.
On November 23, the Department's eight outdoor artificial rinks open.
Parents are urged to send their children and join them in utilizing Detroit's recreation facilities to insure healthful living.
