Rumford. September 17, 1764.

On Sunday the 9th Current, one Mr. William Clements, a young Man living with his elder Brother, tarried at home on said Day, and attempted to destroy himself by taking Powdered Glass in Water; when he had made up his Compound he did not like it, but agreed with himself to mix it with some Peas, which his Sister had Cooked before she went to Meeting—he did so, and eat it, and soon became Sick and full of Pain. I was soon sent for as a Doctor, and many People soon came together to see him: he with the most solemn protestations repeatedly declared that he knew nothing of the Affair, and that he suspected no Person but his Sister, who Cooked the Peas. She steadfastly pleaded not Guilty. He continued in violent Pain till the next Morning about eight o'Clock, when he to his great surprize Vomited such a quantity of Blood, that he thought himself expiring, called hastily for his Sister and confessed this his own iniquitous Scheme, and begg'd the forgiveness of the innocent Woman—The Man is likely to recover.
